What Is Social Media Marketing?

Social media marketing is the use of social platforms to share content, connect with audiences, and promote a brand, product, service, or idea.


Through social media, brands aim to build relationships, stay relevant, and influence how people perceive and interact with them.

The Purpose of Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing supports several key goals. One major goal is raising awareness, or helping people discover and recognize a brand. Another is building retention, which means keeping audiences engaged so they continue coming back. Finally, social media is used to drive action, such as clicks, sign-ups, event attendance, or sales. When done well, social media helps move people from awareness to action.


Different Platforms, Different Audiences

Not all content works the same across platforms. Each social media platform attracts different audiences and supports different types of content.


TikTok is known for short-form video and trends, making it ideal for quick, engaging, and entertaining content. Instagram focuses on visuals and aesthetics, often used for branding, lifestyle content, and storytelling. LinkedIn is more professional and is commonly used for career-focused content, company updates, and thought leadership.
