In the marketing industry, it is common to analyze different firms to better understand the market and competition. For marketing students, case studies are perfect to understand the fundamentals of marketing being applied in real-world scenarios. However, what should one look for in a case study?

Internal and External

Firms are affected by both internal and external factors. In terms of Internal, this can include the company mission, 4Ps, graphics, value strategy, etc. In terms of External, this can include regulation, globalization, competitors, environment, technology, etc. Do keep in mind that marketing is more than advertising.  Marketing creates value that represents the whole firm and is often interconnected with external forces

Recommendations

Swot Analysis is a great starting point to understand the general firm’s pros and cons.  To better understand firms’ marketing strategies, it is recommended to learn about the firm’s intended audience and what it aims to provide them. Porter Five Forces is another great choice for learning how the firm interacts with its external forces in the industry.
