Every time you read reviews before buying something, check comments on social media, or compare brands, you’re already interacting with market research. For marketing students and club members, learning how this process works helps turn creative ideas into decisions that actually make sense.
What Is Market Research?
Market research is the process of collecting and using information to better understand customers, competitors, and the market overall. Instead of guessing what people want, marketers use research to make informed choices about products, messaging, and strategy.

Types of Data
There are two main types of data you’ll see in market research: primary and secondary.
Primary data is information collected directly for a specific purpose. This could be a survey sent to customers, a focus group, or a one-on-one interview. Because it’s collected firsthand, it’s often very specific and useful.
Secondary data is information that already exists. This includes online reviews, industry reports, articles, or published studies. While it wasn’t collected by you, it’s still valuable for understanding the bigger picture.
Why Market Research Matters
Market research helps marketers:
Make decisions based on data, not assumptions
Better understand customer needs and preferences
Identify opportunities and gaps in the market
Improve messaging, products, and campaigns
