Consumer behavior is all about understanding how and why people buy what they buy. From choosing a brand of coffee to deciding what shoes to purchase, consumer behavior explains the decision-making behind everyday choices.
What Is Consumer Behavior?
Consumer behavior looks at how customers choose, use, and respond to products and services. This includes purchasing decisions made by individuals, groups, or even organizations.
For marketers, understanding consumer behavior means learning what influences buying decisions and how to design marketing strategies that align with those influences.

The Purchase Decision Process
Most consumers go through a series of steps before and after making a purchase. While not every purchase follows this exactly, the process helps explain common patterns.
First, a consumer recognizes a problem or need, such as realizing they need new clothes or a new phone. Next comes an information search, where they look at reviews, ask friends, or scroll social media. After that, they move to evaluating alternatives, comparing brands or options. Once a decision is made, the consumer completes the purchase. Finally, post-purchase behavior occurs, where they reflect on whether they’re satisfied, leave a review, or decide if they’d buy again.
Why Consumer Behavior Matters in Marketing
Consumer behavior helps marketers:
Identify what motivates customers to buy
Create more relevant and targeted messaging
Reduce guesswork when launching campaigns
Build stronger relationships with audiences
